The Welfare Issue is Alive, Alive!

Welcome back 70's style welfare! What's next? gas lines? unilateral surrender to our enemies? massive runaway inflation?

That's right, the "stimulus" bill has repealed welfare reform argues Mickey Kaus, in high dudgeon! No more penalties for states that repeal time limits. Since without these, the states have incentive to continue welfare indefinitely due to the massive infusion of $$ they get from the federal government in return, welfare reform is now, in effect, dead.

All this without a debate, in the middle of the night. And they next want to corrupt the census used to apportion congressional seats? And then to legally shut down conservative speech with the fairness doctrine? Obama is a radical socialist, case closed. Shame, shame on the drive by press for covering up the true nature of this radical leftist takeover of America...T

RONALD REAGAN started it, Bill Clinton finished it and last week Barack Obama was accused of engineering its destruction. One of the few undisputed triumphs of American government of the past 20 years – the sweeping welfare reform programme that sent millions of dole claimants back to work – has been plunged into jeopardy by billions of dollars in state handouts included in the president’s controversial economic stimulus package

...A reemerging "welfare" issue is a potential killer, in other words, for Obama's big remaining plans, especially health care. If Dems seem determined to reinstate dependency--or at the least blind to the dangers of dependency--voters aren't going to trust them to spend trillions on universal health insurance and fortified pensions. It's hard to believe Obama doesn't realize this.
